About Lake Norman Location An "inland sea," Lake Norman has more than 520 miles of shoreline and covers nearly 32,500 acres (50 square miles) in four counties - Catawba, Iredell, Mecklenburg and Lincoln. It stretches 34 miles north to south and 9 miles at its widest point. It was created in 1963 when the Cowands Ford Dam was built.
